Don’t forget your own sleep - three simple tips for new parents in need of more sleep

Don’t forget your own sleep - three simple tips for new parents in need of more sleep

It’s the question every new parent dreads being asked.

Not - how are you dealing with the crying?

Or, do you miss nights in the pub?

No, it’s something much more personal.

The question which puts your hairs on edge is deceptively simple: “how are you sleeping?”

We’ve all been there.

And we know even thinking about the night ahead of you makes you more tired. But hope isn’t lost - with a change in mindset and the help of the right tech, any new parent can improve their own sleep.

Sleep when they sleep

It sounds like a cliche, but it really isn’t - adapting your nighttime sleep pattern to match your baby’s will benefit both of you in the long run. While it might be tempting to try and cram in your usual box set binge when your child settles in for the night, you’re better off using at least some of that time to sleep - and if you’re not someone who can just drop off, why not help yourself along by listening to a relaxing playlist or audiobook in bed.

Don’t neglect the daytime nap

Naps aren’t just for kids -they’re a chance for you to get some well-deserved shut-eye as well. And we’ve all got friends and family who’d love a chance to get some more time with our little bundles of joy.

So don’t be afraid to invite a friend to come over and watch both of you while you’re napping - it will help you sleep with confidence. Even better, consider if you can set up a support bubble with someone and arrange a social occasion as a thank you for them helping out - even something as simple as a pizza and movie night could do you the world of good.

Give your brain a break

If you’re like us, you probably worry that every time you drop off your child will immediately wake up. That’s only natural. But it’s ruining the precious hours of sleep that you’re getting.

Luckily - help is at hand. At Owlet, we believe that the best way for parents to sleep more is to know that their baby is ok. That’s why our products are designed to give you peace of mind by letting you know if your baby’s heart rate or oxygen levels go outside of the preset “safe” zones. It’s a small thing, but knowing you’ll be notified when your newborn needs attention can take the edge off your stress and allow you to enjoy your own slumber.

Adapting your life to looking after a newborn isn’t always easy. And your sleep is often the first thing to suffer.  If you need to make a change- find out how the Owlet Smart Sock can boost your peace of mind and help you sleep more easily here.
